Under attack,Chidambaram gets PM praise

Under attack from the Opposition,Union Home Minister P Chidambaram received some much-needed support from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Under attack from the Opposition,Union Home Minister P Chidambaram received some much-needed support from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, with the latter praising the “enlightened leadership” and capability of his Cabinet colleague in front of his home crowd in Sivaganga on Monday.

Chidambaram is facing flak from Opposition parties and his critics alike over charges that he,as the then Union Finance Minister, had played a role in the 2G spectrum scam, and that he misused his powers as the Home Minister to help a former client. He has denied the allegations.

“Since 2004,I have been deriving immense support from his enlightened leadership as Finance Minister and then as Home Minister. Whatever task is given to him,he performs with super aplomb,” said Singh at a function in Karaikudi in Sivaganga district,Chidambaram’s hometown from where he won the Lok Sabha elections.

With Chidambaram sitting among the audience,Singh recalled the early ‘90s when he was the Finance Minister and Chidambaram was the junior minister in charge of the Commerce Ministry.
