Two Indians get Gates foundation grant

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation granted $100,000 each to two of the Indian scientists for their unconventional ideas.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Tuesday granted $100,000 each to two of the Indian scientists for their unconventional ideas,as part of its Grand Challenges Explorations grant.

In all,405 researchers from 34 countries were selected to explore concepts for new health technologies. The two Indian scientists were selected to pursue their bold ideas for transforming health.

One of the experts from India — Sujoy Guha from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — will test a new transcervical contraceptive made from a polymer compound for its ability to incapacitate both sperm and ovum.

Another Indian — Abi Santhosh Aprem of HLL Lifecare Ltd. — will attempt to eliminate the side effects associated with copper T intrauterine devices by coating the copper with biodegradable polymers.

The polymers could prevent bulk shedding of copper ions that cause bleeding,cramps and pain,leading to increased acceptance of this highly effective contraceptive device.

In five rounds,405 researchers from 34 countries have been awarded grants.
