Facelift for Assam rhino sanctuary
While Kaziranga remains the biggest attraction as the original home of the great one-horned rhinoceros,the 38.8-sq km Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary too has begun getting importance,thanks to its proximity to Guwahati,the state capital. Hardly 30 km from the city,Pobitora,home to as many as 84 rhinos,also holds the world record for the highest density of the one-horned animal. The Centre has just released Rs 6 crore for the sanctuary,with which the authorities plan to construct a hanging bridge,a series of watch-towers as well as more accommodation for visitors,all to be ready by November,when it reopens after the rainy season get over.

Tripura Police will become the first police force in eastern India to be conferred with the Presidents Colours when Pratibha Patil honours it for its exemplary and dignified service. Known for tackling insurgency for nearly three decades and playing a key role in bringing back peace to the frontier state,Tripura Police is one of the security forces in the entire country with the least cases of human rights violations.
Mizo youths take on drugs
In Mizoram,the Young Mizo Association YMA has launched a massive campaign against drugs. The YMA has set up its own squads,which conducted raids and seized drugs worth Rs 1.84 lakh in May alone. While drug abuse has claimed over 1,100 lives in the state since 1984,the figures have come down dramatically from 143 in 2004 to about 15 in 2010.
