The Power of One

Arjun Salujas penchant for androgyny gets a spiritual edge in his autumn-winter wear

Every time Arjun Saluja prepares a collection for the runway,it seems hes putting a piece of himself out in the open for the judgemental glares and stares. Fashion,he makes us believe, isnt just about putting fabric and sequins together. Its personal like writing a letter,to a friend in a faraway land,in which you pen down your fears, insecurities, opinions, answers and questions. Every season,Saluja lets us understand his reclusive, even quirky, persona a bit more. Going by his Autumn-Winter 2013 collection,he has been trying to answer several questions about defined sexuality, and androgyny, through his clothes. Titled Aik One in Hindi, the range reflects his state of mind spiritual and at peace.

There are plenty of silhouettes jackets with zippers at the back,knee-length skirts paired with straight-fit pants, long skirts, dhoti pants, dresses with pillowy sleeves and a sari worn over a pair of pants. Colours remind one of a calm but dark winter grey, white, black, dark blue, olive green and fabrics such as wool, georgette and tweed silk give a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Salujas storytelling skills are impressive but they dont make him lose sight of the techniques and structuring that he is best known for. As one watches male models walking the ramp in plain, grey long shirts with formal blazers, and the female models sporting collared shirts with knee-length skirts over pants, the harmony in Salujas mind becomes evident. There are prints as well, inspired by the geometric designs on Azerbaijan rugs and Turkish mystics. A pair of glittery pants with a well-fitted black top,and a dark plum sari with a blingy print top worn with woollen pants make us want to thank Saluja for letting us take a stroll inside his brain, where his fashion workshop really is.
