That lady in white

Simi Garewal tells us what audiences can expect from her latest rendezvous with the stars in Simi Selects India’s Most Desirables.

You pioneered chat-shows on Indian television with Rendezvous With Simi Garewal. What is your take on the shows that have happened over the years?

Rendezvous… set a standard of its own. Since it was a success, many tried to do similar shows, but I think what I had created was different from what anybody has. In fact,so many chat-shows have come up that there is no novelty or diversity to it any more. Which is why I have worked hard to come up with a completely new concept and a fresh presentation. To a large extent I have achieved it. The format of Simi Selects India’s Most Desirable is different from all the chat-shows that you have watched on television including Rendezvous…

How is it different from Rendezvous..?

India’s Most Desirable has almost everything for everyone. The first segment caters to people who like Rendezvous…,the second segment ‘Personality Cafe’ is for families while the third, fourth and fifth segments, which are full of games and entertainment, are totally for the young audiences. Through my games, you will get to know much more about a star’s personality and desirability factor. Does he have a sense of humour? Is he quick thinking? How would he deal with you if you were his girl-friend? Is he patient? etc. Mind you, even the games are different in every episode depending on who is the personality. In ‘Truth Bucket’ I have got young intelligent college kids who get a chance to ask a question they want and over which I have no control. It is up to the guest whether he or she wants to answer and if not,is given a penalty. There’s also a segment where the guests draws a self-portrait which is later auctioned for charity on our website.

Sounds like you are set to have fun on the show.

Yes. So far, people have seen my formal,prim-and-propah side. But I have many sides to my personality. My friends have seen me at my playful best and you will see that side of me.

Will India’s Most Desirable be drawn from Bollywood only or from different fields?

Frankly, when I was making my list I found a lot of people who are eligible but that’s not the same as desirable. Today, one who has beauty, glamour, wealth, lifestyle and talent is considered the most desirable and is fantasised about. And the way things stand at the moment, the most sought-after people are film stars. But I have people like Siddharth Mallya and Yuvraj Singh who are also undoubtedly desirable,on my show.

Your show is coming just after Koffee With Karan, which thrived on controversial statements..

(Cuts in) You must remember that Koffee With Karan came after Rendezvous. I feel there’s much more to people than just gossip or sensationalism. So,I won’t be talking to them about their co-stars or controversies. If I am choosing someone as the most desirable,I want to know more about the person and that is what I will try to bring out.

You always made a fashion statement with your white outfits. What is the fascination with the colour and what made you wear black this time?

I am wearing black only for one episode, the inaugural one with Ranbir Kapoor. I just loved this black outfit with a silver top which I saw somewhere and asked (designer) Anamika Khanna if she would do it for me. I think the black outfit is beautiful. But white is my colour. I can’t explain what I feel when I wear white. I feel good, happy and peaceful. So,you will see me wearing white only in outfits created by Shahab Durazi.

So are your sets also going to be completely white?

The opening segment will be white but as the show progresses, the colours will change according to the different segments. For the segment on family, there will be softer colours because it is emotional and the segment targetted at youngsters will have multiple colours. I must tell you that the entire set has been designed by me.

Will we see you doing any other TV show or a film?

I am planning to do one film after wrapping up my show.
