Two controversial IPS officers of Gujarat cadre P C Pande and O P Mathur retired from service on Tuesday, after they were denied extension by Central Home Department. The state Government had demanded the extension of the two officers terms, which was not approved by the Union Home Ministry.

P C Pande, who was the Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad during the 2002 post-Godhra communal riots, has been accused of not taking action during the riots in Ahmedabad, which resulted in hundreds of people being killed. Pande was removed from the post of Director General of Police by the Election Commission during the 2007 Assembly Elections after it found him close to the ruling party.

The state Government had demanded that Pande be given a one-year extension so that he could complete two years as DGP.

While Pande was the Director of Anti-Corruption Bureau,Mathur was the DG,Communications. Mathur was alleged to have links with Ahmedabad don Abdul Latif. Mathur was the officer under whose supervision CID Crime investigated the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.
