Suspended additional director general of police A K Jain,accused in the Dara Singh fake encounter case,surrendered before a special CBI court here on Monday. He went missing in June last year. The CBI court remanded Jain in judicial custody for one day. In its chargesheet,the CBI had accused Jain of engineering the fake encounter in 2006. Another IPS officer,A Ponnuchami,and several other policemen are in judicial custody in this case. CBI sources stated that they would move the court for the police remand on Tuesday. Recently,the CBI had announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for information about Jain,after declaring him a proclaimed offender,The agency was even mulling an Interpol red corner notice against him. Of the 14 police personnel accused in the chargesheet,four inspectors are still absconding. On October 23,2006,a team of the state Special Operations Group had gunned down Dara Singh in an encounter here. The police had claimed that they were trying to arrest him when Singh fired at them and fled. Chasing him on foot,the police gunned him down near the Kamla Nagar flyover. The Supreme Court had ordered a CBI probe into the encounter,following a petition filed by Singhs wife,Sushila Devi,who claimed her husband was killed in cold blood. The CBI had mentioned in the chargesheet that former BJP state minister Rajendra Rathore may have been a part of the conspiracy. A senior CBI official said that Rathore has not been named as an accused since investigations are pending.
