Surat woman throws her newborn from third floor

A 24-year-old woman allegedly threw her newborn baby from the third floor of a building in Punagam area of the city on Thursday night. The baby died. Police said the woman delivered the boy in her bedroom when her family members were busy watching TV. She wrapped him in a plastic bag and threw him out as she did not want a baby so soon after her marriage.

As per details,Pooja and her husband Jignesh Shapadia,a resident of Ajmal Palace,got married nearly a year ago. Police said passers-by saw the incident and rushed the infant to SMIMER Hospital where the newborn was declared dead on arrival. Pooja was reportedly with her in-laws in the flat. Her husband was not at home when the incident occurred,police said. Police found Pooja “mentally unstable” following which she was taken to the hospital where she was undergoing treatment. Their neighbour on Vasubhai Sabalpara has lodged complaint in this connection at Punagam police station.

DCP N D Solanki said,“Pooja married Jignesh around a year ago. She told us that she did not want a child within one year and so she threw the boy on the road. We have not arrested her yet as she is undergoing treatment.” Police have registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC and started investigation.
