Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi today appealed to the Election Commission (EC) to prevent the implementation of the sub-quota for Muslims in the OBC quota, saying that the announcement to the effect was clearly influenced by vote bank politics.
Joshi added that if the EC didnt do anything about the sub-quota,it would mean that it (EC) was waiting for this announcement to be made before declaring the poll programme for five states. It (move for Muslim quota) impedes free and fair elections, Joshi said here today.
The BJP leader, who was in Nagpur to meet RSS leaders, said,The BJP supports quota only for socio-educative reasons for backward sections of the society. And there is no provision in the Constitution for giving it on the basis of religion. Here, attempt has been made to cut into the quota of OBCs by giving a slice from it to Muslims. This is violative of the original spirit of the Constitution. Muslim quota has already been granted by the Mandal Commission. The new quota will only go to the creamy layer amongst them. This will harm communal and social harmony.
