The Maoists call to shun Republic Day functions in Orissa had little impact as thousands turned up at Republic Day functions across the state. Despite getting an e-mail threat on Monday,Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik attended the Republic Day function at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
The Maoists had given a two-day bandh call on Monday and Tuesday,protesting arrest of Subhasree Das,wife of top Maoist leader,and industrialization in the state.
Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner B K Sharma said the police have identified the cybercafe in Bhubaneswar,from where the threatening e-mail was sent to the Chief Minister.
The mail was sent by one Babuli Behera,who had threatened to kill Naveen if he did not release Subhasree Das.
Over 100 Maoists attacked two private construction companies in Keonjhar and Koraput districts on Monday night and damaged several vehicles.
Maoist fear was witnesses in some areas in Kandhamal district as people avoided Republic Day functions.
Meanwhile,the state government has decided to give ex gratia compensation to two persons killed by the Maoists in Koraput on January 11.
Armed Maoists had killed Hari Sahukar 58 and Budi Biswanath Patra 40 of Katulpeta village in Koraput,accusing them of being police informers. The state government would
give Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased,a Home Department official said.
