For the first time in his 50-year career as actor, veteran Soumitra Chatterjee is playing the role of a magician. The name of the film is Hing Ting Chhot which is actually a nonsensical phrase sometimes used casually in everyday lingo but actually means nothing.
The film marks the directorial debut of Anasua Roy Choudhury, who earlier worked on a National Film Archive of Indias fellowship project on Soumitra Chatterjee that was later published as a book. She has also made documentaries and promotional films.
Chatterjee plays the central role of Kuhok,a magician,in the film. Digital Sonali,a pretty young girl,is his sidekick who always tags along with him. He insists that Digital Sonali is not human and has therefore to be carried from place to place in a box. The story is inherently serious but Anasua has made it like a wholesome, entertaining comedy.
The idea of making a comedy was triggered by two important things – firstly, comedy carries a universal appeal for the audience and secondly,it can be used as a powerful disguise to underline important messages. The film itself happened like magic. Im the creative director with GBC Enterprise Limited,a firm engaged in tea plantations and tourism in North Bengal. They wanted to venture into films. But they also wanted their first movie to promote their business interests and also tell an entertaining story. I suddenly had this brainwave to create a script around a journey that would connect the firms tourism spots within some characters and their interactions. So I thought to myself – why not bring some interesting characters to a given place somewhere in the midst of the tree plantations in a resort owned by my producers and pit the characters against each other through a magician? And the story began almost to write itself out, says Anasua who is very focussed about her film. Destiny plays a pivotal role and this is what drives the story of Hing Ting Chhot to some extent. The film is produced under the banner of GBC Enterprise Limited on a screenplay by Debaloy Bhattacharya. Barun De Joardar is the cameraman, music is by Mayukh-Mainak and lyrics are penned by Anasua and Anupam.
