Soren loyalist Champai Soren was elected as leader of the JMM’s legislative party to replace Shibu Soren after he lost the Tamar bypoll. Meanwhile, the CM said he would resign on Monday at 11 am. “I will resign tomorrow morning. I will appeal to all UPA allies to accept Champai Soren as their leader,” Soren said here.

Champai, who represented Sareaikela in the Assembly on JMM ticket for three consecutive terms since 1995,is Soren’s choice to replace him. He was endorsed by over ten of the party’s 17 MLAs in preference to Soren’s wife Rupi, son Durga and state Agriculture Minister Nalin Soren.

However, even Champai’s candidature eludes consensus since as many as seven JMM MLAs,led by Mathura Mahato and Sushila Hansda, chose to oppose him.Camping at the official residence of Mahato,Hansda expressed her resentment against the party’s decision. “We will remain within the party. But we will not accept Champai as Guruji’s successor,” Hansda said.

Even the constituents of the government in Jharkhand, the Congress,RJD and five Independents MLAs — Madhu Koda,Joba Manjhi,Bandhu Tirkey,Bhanu Pratap Shahi and Stephen Marandi — who were ministers in the Soren government, had not come out in support of Champai. Except Manjhi and Tirkey, who were veering towards Champai,Shahi and Marandi were pitching for former CM Madhu Koda, who is backed by RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.

“We have made our stand clear. Now we will accept any decision taken in this regard by the UPA leadership,” said Marandi who called upon Soren to resign without any further delay.
