Family members of Asrar Mushtaq Dar,the 20-year-old college student whose murder sparked the latest round of protests in Srinagar,on Thursday accused the Jammu and Kashmir Police of lax investigations and sought the intervention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to bring the culprits to book.

Police were slow in their investigations, said Asrars uncle Kursheed Ahmad. They didnt investigate the case with the intensity and specialisation they should have.

Ahmad and Asrars father Mehraj-ud-din Dar sought the intervention of the Chief Minister and DGP Kuldeep Khoda. We appeal to CM Omar Abdullah and the DGP to take personal interest in this case, Ahmad said.

On whether they suspected the police or any civilian individual behind the murder,Ahmad said: We cant rule out anything. Investigation is not our job. Let the police probe it. The family members said Asrars body bore burn marks and that his hands and legs were tied. His face was mutilated and it was difficult to identify him, his uncle said.

The commerce student had gone missing on July 3 after he left home for a gym at Tankipora. His body was recovered from a graveyard on Wednesday.
