Six men who raped a 39-year-old Swiss tourist near Datia after tying up her partner were sentenced to life imprisonment on Saturday,four months after the crime.
After landing in India on February 15,the couple on way to Agra on bicycles,had camped for the night at Jhadia village off Datia-Indergarh road on May 15 when six men from a nearby village attacked their tent around 9 pm.
Armed with a gun and sticks,they first asked the male partner to come out and demanded money. The victim came out after sensing that something was wrong but both were beaten up.
The accused then took turns to rape her while the partner was taken some distance away and beaten up. The accused had fled with a laptop,cellphone,batteries and earphones and Rs 10,000 items that eventually helped in conviction.
The accused were arrested within two days.
Special court judge Jitendra Sharma fined the six accused Rs 10,000 each and said Rs 50,000 from that amount will be given to the victim,who had been so traumatised by the incident that she refused to come to identify the accused.
Rampro,23,Brijesh,24,Bhuta,30,Rishi,20,Vishnu 25,and Nitin,22,were given life sentence for rape while Rampro was separately sentenced to three more years in jail under the Arms Act.
Government Pleader Rajendra Tiwari said DNA tests helped pin down five of the accused,except Rishi. However,the looted items were recovered from him,which confirmed that he was too was involved in the crime.
The Datia police had completed the investigation in 11 days and filed the chargesheet on March 26.
