Drinking soya milk twice a day reduces hot flushes
LONDON: Ladies, please note drinking soya milk at least twice a day can reduce hot flushes, and it works better the longer you have it,says a new study. Researchers have found that a couple of daily servings of foods and drinks made from the soya plant led to a reduction in the frequency and severity of hot flushes by 26 per cent in women. Soya contains isoflavones,oestrogen-like plant hormones, which are believed to have a beneficial effect on health. The latest evidence comes from a review of 19 studies involving more than 1,200 women, the Daily Mail reported. Hot flushes occur suddenly, lasting about four minutes on average, and produce an uncomfortable feeling of intense heat. Lead author Prof Melissa Melby of Delaware University said: When you combine them all, weve found the overall effect is still positive. If youre 50 and have never touched soya, its not too late. Weve found that it still helps. The researchers said that when women consumed soya for 12 weeks or more, the drop in frequency of hot flushes was about threefold greater than in shorter trials.
Moderate exercise linked to quicker conception
WASHINGTON: Moderate exercise is tied to greater success among women trying to get pregnant, but those who work out vigorously take longer to conceive,an international study has found. This study is the first to find that the effect of physical activity on fertility varied by body mass index, said lead author Lauren Wise,a reproductive epidemiologist at Boston University. Body mass index (BMI) is a ratio of height to weight. Researchers in the United States and Denmark followed more than 3,500 Danish women aged 18 to 40 who were trying to conceive over the course of a year for the study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility. All reported being in a stable relationship with a male partner and were not receiving any fertility treatments. The researchers found that women who spent more than five hours per week doing moderate exercise were 18 per cent more likely to become pregnant during any given menstrual cycle than women who performed moderate exercise for less than an hour each week.
Scientists discover how morphine works
WASHINGTON: Scientists claim to have made a major discovery that could lead to more effective treatment of severe pain using morphine,an important pain relief drug. Use of morphine can lead to a range of side effects such as patients developing tolerance to morphine and increased sensitivity to pain. Until now,how this occurs has remained a mystery. Now,a team from the University of Colorado in the US and the University of Adelaide in Australia has shown for the first time that opioid drugs like morphine activate an immune receptor in the brain to create an inflammatory response in the brain. They have also demonstrated how this brain immune receptor can be blocked, laying the groundwork for development of new therapeutic drugs that improve the effectiveness of morphine while reducing many of its problematic side effects. Because morphine is considered to be such an important drug in the management of moderate to severe pain in patients right around the world,we believe these results will have far-reaching benefits, said lead author Dr Mark Hutchinson.
