On the run from counter-terror agencies,Shahzad Ahmad took shelter with relatives in Azamgarh,Lucknow and other places in UP,often helping them earn their livelihoods. One of his hosts was a distant uncle in Azamgarh who dealt in stocks and shares, and Shahzad put his knowledge of computers at this relative’s disposal, helping him to trade online. The UP ATS is now looking out for this man.

Sources in the Delhi Police Special Cell said Shahzad has told interrogators that he visited Azamgarh seven or eight times between September 2008,when the Batla House encounter took place, and his arrest on February 1 this year. He stayed with the uncle, whose name he says is Hakim,on these visits. “He stayed for 15 to 20 days every time,” said a source. “He checked market rates of stocks on the Internet and helped the uncle with online transactions. He has done a multimedia course, and is well versed with computers. He helped out his uncle in return for the hospitality he received.”

Shahzad is also being questioned on Saturday’s Pune blast, suspected to have been carried out by the Indian Mujahideen. Some 20 members of the IM — including Junaid, who escaped from Batla House with Shahzad,Shadab Bhai alias Malik,Sajid,Mohammed Khalid,Arif and Salman — remain at large, and they all are capable of making the kind of bomb that was used in the attack, officials said.

On Monday,a team of the Kolkata policemen questioned Shahzad at the Special Cell office to ascertain what information he has on Amir Reza Khan, one of the founders of the IM who is wanted in the January 22,2002 attack on the American Center in Kolkata.
