Divya Salaskar,23,daughter of police officer Vijay Salaskar who was killed during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, joined as Assistant Commissioner (Sales Tax) on Friday.

“I was sworn in on Friday morning,it’s a traditional oath where I promised I would be loyal to my work, and my country and be honest to my work,” she said, explaining her first day at work. This is the first job for Divya, who has completed a postgraduate course in Human Resources from London.

“I was shown my cabin in the morning and it felt nice. It was a strange feeling and I recalled my father’s cabin, always full of files, papers and more papers. In the days to come my cabin will start looking like that,” she says adding,“I was first sent to the office library where I was asked to pick and read as many books as possible by my seniors. The first book I picked was on Maharashtra Value-Added-Tax (Bare Act). I will be reading on the subject. Since I am a special case and do not have a batch, the department is working on a training programme for me.”

Yet to be introduced to the entire office, she adds how the ‘madam’ culture was a bit daunting in the beginning. “My days in London have made me more independent and sincere to life. I look forward to bringing that attitude to my everday work,” she says.

At home, mother Smita says,“she left for work after offering prayers to her father. She looked happy.”
