Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh warned on Saturday that the modern face of Naxalism is reflected in the projects that violate environment and forest rules and displace populations. Emphasising that development in rural and tribal areas was the key to countering Left-wing extremism, the Union Minister cautioned that if environment issues were neglected, these would acquire support of Naxalites. "If not handled well, these issues can acquire Naxal overtones,'' Ramesh said after a review meeting with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and senior officials on Left Wing Extremism-affected districts in the state. He said that Left extremism could be controlled through development. "Development should be the mantra and the most important task is to resolve land-related issues. The modern face of Naxalism is reflected in projects that flout environment and forest norms like Posco,Vedanta, bauxite mining in Araku and power project in Sompeta in Srikakulam here. These are serious issues that could acquire Naxal overtones if not handled well," Ramesh said. "The tribal-dominated areas which are affected are thick forests endowed with minerals located between Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh-Andhra Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh-Chhattisgarh-Orissa. These areas have no road connectivity, communications and infrastructure facilities,'' Ramesh said. He praised the Andhra government's Integrated Tribal Development Agency and initiative to invest Rs 2,200 crore in infrastructure development in areas bordering Chhattisgarh,Maharashtra and Orissa, which are prone to Left-wing extremism.
