Cartoons lampooning Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot which featured on BJPs election hoardings across the state have become the subject of controversy after state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vinod Zutshi ordered their removal. Terming Zutshis actions as partial to the ruling government,a BJP delegation met Election Commission of India (ECI) officials in New Delhi on Thursday pressing to file charges against the CEO.
Protesting against the CEOs notice, senior BJP leader and former minister Rajendra Rathore said he had become the “Congress Electoral Officer” as he was being partial to Gehlot and his party. “We have filed a complaint with the ECI about the CEO’s actions in the state. We believe nothing was wrong with the content of the hoardings as they only state the truth,” said Rathore. He added that Zutshi had not taken any action against the Congress during the Assembly elections last November when the BJP complained about Congress advertisements depicting former CM Vasundhara Raje with a gun.
Some of the cartoons include the slogans “Sarkar badle hain ya badle ka sarkar hain (Has the government changed or is it a vengeful government)”,another depicts a Gehlot caricature cutting a ribbon along with the slogan that Gehlot was taking credit for work done during the BJP regime, while a third one includes a series of panels depicting the CM transforming into a parrot, apparently referring to his oft-repeated corruption charges against the BJP.
BJP spokesperson Kailash Nath Bhatt, who met ECI officials on Thursday, said there were 67 such hoardings in Jaipur and around 340 across the state with eight themes. “These hoardings are funny and do not violate the election code of conduct,” Bhatt said.
It was on April 7 that Zutshi issued notices to Lok Sansthan,an NGO,for erecting hoardings that depicted cartoons with a striking resemblance to Gehlot maintaining it was character assassination. The following day,the BJP acquired the rights to the cartoons from the NGO and erected more, while claiming the CEO’s actions were unfair. Taking it further,Zutshi issued a circular that no hoardings should be erected without prior approval from the state election department.
