The BJP’s booklet attacking the BSP government may have failed to deliver the intended message in villages as party workers are complaining that they have to explain to the aam aadmi that this is not a “behenji ki kitaab”,“this booklet is by the BJP against the poor governance by the UP Chief Minister”.

Entitled Uttar Pradesh ki BSP Sarkaar Ke Viruddh Jannyayalay Mein Chargesheet (a chargesheet in the court of people against the BSP govt of UP),the 32-page booklet focuses on the corruption and crime allegedly flourishing under the BSP-led government. It has a colourful cover page, showing a caricature of Chief Minister Mayawati wearing a crown and riding an elephant with a blue cloth. The elephant is crushing the masses, which shows that the state government’s policies are crushing the poor. The allegations have been framed under 10 sub-heads.

In January, copies of the booklets — around 20 lakh copies have been printed — were sent to all the district units, asking the workers to distribute them amongst the rural folk during small meetings on price rise and inflation.

Barely a month has passed since the booklets were sent, but district unit workers have started complaining to the state unit about the cover page. Some of them have also sent back the copies while others have removed the cover page and then distributed it,according to sources.

“The booklet is really informative and surely brings out information about the atrocities of the state government. But the cover page is a major drawback as on the first view,it looks like a booklet for Mayawati rather than against her,” said a district coordinator from Sitapur.

Another district worker from Azamgarh said he was shocked to hear the villagers call the booklet “behenji ki kitaab”.

“Our workers were distributing these booklets during a public meeting, and some of the villagers took the booklet calling it ‘behenji ki kitaab’. When we told them that this booklet is by the BJP against the poor governance by the UP Chief Minister, only then did they understand. We also had to show them the back cover where the photograph of state president Ramapati Ram Tripathi and the party symbol have been printed. Since the first impression goes wrong,we aren’t sure whether the people are reading the booklet or not, despite containing such exhaustive and well-researched material.”

However, the state unit president maintains the “chargesheet” has been framed after much research and the booklet cover too is a perfect idea.

“We finalised the cover ourselves as it is a wonderful caricature showing Mayawati and her elephant crushing people. This is what is happening in UP today, with the common man suffering everyday,” he said. “The material will remove any confusion, and people should read the chargesheet.”
