The uncertainty over the tripartite talks on the Gorkhaland issue among the Centre, the state government and the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) to be held in New Delhi on July 24 ended Wednesday with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram convincing Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to send a team to the meeting.
Bhattacharjee had on July 18 written to Chidambaram, demanding that the talks be deferred till the killers of All India Gorkha League president Madan Tamang were nabbed. On Wednesday, the CM relented after a call from Chidambaram.
The development, however, hasnt gone down well with his Cabinet colleagues. Minister for Urban Development Ashok Bhattacharya said the talks will only give legitimacy to the GJM. Chidambaram had called the Chief Minister, who had to agree following the formers insistence. But I am not going to attend the meeting; it will be Minister for Health Surya Kanta Mishra and Home Secretary Samar Ghosh who will going.
Bhattacharya also said he was unwilling to sit with people accused of murder charges. It is because of constitutional obligations that the state government is attending the meet. But I am not ready to sit with tainted people; I believe the talks will increase trouble in the hills.
