One test for all MBBS entrance,PG courses: SC

Senior advocate Amarendra Sharan,appearing for MCI,said the Centre had on August 13,2010,agreed with MCI’s plan to go ahead with the implementation of the single entrance criteria. The regulations were notified four months later.

MCI approached the court in October 2010 for a CET in all medical institutions,including private and minority colleges. On February 18,2011,the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was in talks with state governments on the issue.

Though the court,in an interim order on December 18 last year,allowed MCI to go ahead with the CET,it decided to give states and private and minority medical colleges an opportunity to raise objections.

The Bench was inclined to a cautious approach,saying students were a “volatile” community. But students have supported the new MCI rules in a separate application,saying it would prevent “rampant seat blockage/wastage and seats being sold for crores”.
