Former Madhya Pradesh CM Uma Bharati and Digvijaya Singh, who fought bitterly against each other in the 2003 election, found a common target Friday in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government and demanded a CBI probe into the alleged manipulation of various examinations conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB).
However, the former BJP CM,and currently partys national vice-president,was more aggressive and equated the scam with the fodder scam involving former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad. Since the names of important political leaders have cropped up,the probe by Special Task Force (STF) could get scuttled due to pressure or as part of a conspiracy, she said while describing the dragging of her name into the scam as a conspiracy.
A probe by the STF has so far revealed involvement of a couple of former BJP ministers, senior MPPEB officials and a host of middlemen.
Bharati who had sought an appointment with the DGP Friday was surprised to find the senior-most police officer knocking her doors early in the morning. She quoted DGP Nandan Dubey as having told her that she was neither an accused nor wanted for questioning and hence he preferred to clarify things by meeting her personally. She said she asked the DGP to probe how her name cropped up.
There are certain names that once revealed would come as a shock, Bharati said. She did not name anyone but dropped hints when she alleged that some people are on the run because they are scared to name those at the top.
Dont worry, turn yourselves in and name those behind the scam. I assure you no one will be harmed.
She said her name was picked from about 100 leaders who may have called former higher education minister Laxmikant Sharma for different reasons. It was released as part of a conspiracy but they had to eat their words. I request my elder brother Shivraj Singh Chouhan to order a CBI probe, she said adding that Sharma was dear to her and Chouhan as also other leaders.
On his part,Digvijaya Singh alleged that the call detail records of MPPEB officials Pankaj Trivedi,Nitin Mahindra and Ajay Mehta would prove exchange of calls from Chouhans residence and office. Unlike Bharati,he visited the CM House to congratulate Chouhan on winning the Assembly elections but said he also discussed the scandal.
Both Bharati and Singh alleged that lakhs of students and candidates had suffered as a result of the scam.
While addressing reporters at the Congress headquarters,Singh alleged that Chouhan had tried to hush up the matter since the beginning. He quoted replies to questions asked in the Assembly in support of his allegation.
