Sunil Yash Kalra, who has served Indian sports in different capacities for 10 years, recently launched his docu-drama titled Poor Cousins Of Million $ Babies. A 25-minute high action sports drama,it takes the viewers into the minds, lives and dressing room of women cricketers in India.
The film, which features members of the National Womens Cricket Squad of India, has been shot in four countries over years years. The protagonists of the film,Anjum Chopra and Jhulan Goswami, are members of the Indian Womens Cricket Team who despite facing adversities fulfilled their long-cherished dream of playing at Lords Cricket Grounds in England. After India brought home the World Cup in 1983 and the T-20 in 2007,men cricketers acquired the status of Million $ Babies. Women are definitely the poor cousins, said Kalra.
The writer said that he had thought of getting stars to act in his film and had approached some production houses for the same. Having a star in your film brings instant recognition to a project, but the response I got from film houses dampened my spirit. So I went ahead with Anjum and Jhulan.
They may not have acted in his film but the writer found support in Yash Rash Films,Rani Mukerji and Jaideep Sahni They are not associated with the movie but they are well-wishers of women in sports. Rani released the poster of my docu-drama saying that the film was a tribute to all women who have faced hardships to nuture cricket and endured scepticism and ridicule to promote it, said Kalra, who shot the film in the dressing- rooms of cricket grounds such as Eden Gardens,MCG and Lords.
