Nine babies die in Orissa hospital,probe ordered

Nine newborns have died at the government-run VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla in Sambalpur district in the past 24 hours,prompting the state government to order a probe.

Superintendent of the medical college Laxmikant Das said most of the babies admitted to the special newborn care unit at the hospital were either grossly underweight or suffered brain haemorrhage and had massive congestion in chest when they were admitted to the premier medical college.

“This is sheer coincidence. Most of the babies were not born here and were referred from other hospitals or nursing homes,” he said.
