NIA ‘informant’ returns home

His family had lodged a protest with the local administration over Alam going missing from NIA detention.

NIA ‘informant’ Mehre Alam, who was reported to have ‘escaped’ from the agency’s custody in Muzaffarpur, reached his Darbhanga home late Thursday night. But Alam’s family in Sidhauli village neither confirmed nor denied news of his return.

Alam, who had been assisting the NIA with information on one of Patna serial blast accused,Hyder Ali,had reportedly ‘slipped away’ from a Muzaffarpur hotel after having learnt that the NIA wanted to take him to Delhi for further questioning. The NIA had tracked Alam after the Bodhgaya blasts and received information from him.

Sources said Alam moved around in UP,where he stayed at his acquaintances’ homes, before finally deciding to return to Sidhauli. His family had lodged a protest with the local administration over Alam going missing from NIA detention.

Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur police confirmed Alam’s return but said there was no instruction from the NIA to bring him back for questioning.

“It is NIA that has been questioning him and there is no question of local police meeting Alam after his return. Our duty is only to assist NIA team when it visits here,” Darbhanga Range DIG Anwar Hussain said.
