2011 BURNING OF VILLAGES: Tarmetla,Timmapur and Morpalli in Dantewada were burnt down,allegedly by security forces,in March. Local women alleged misbehaviour by security men; Swami Agnivesh was heckled and prevented from going to the villages,and accused then Dantewada SSP S R P Kalluri of masterminding this. The CBI is probing all allegations. CLOUD ON ESSAR: The company was slapped with an FIR for supporting Naxals. Its offices were raided and GM D C V S Verma was arrested in September. Other prominent arrests were of Lingaram Kodapi and Soni Sori,for alleged Naxal links. SALWA JUDUM: In July,the Supreme Court declared that giving arms to Special Police Officers to fight Naxals was unconstitutional and directed the state to immediately disband the Salwa Judum force. The government brought an ordinance and then a law to legalise SPOs by inducting them as policemen. EYE SURGERY: Over 50 persons lost sight in one eye and four died in Durg and Kawardha after cataract operations in eye camps. The district administration admitted negligence by doctors and improper surgical procedures. The NHRC has sent the government a notice. BINAYAK SEN: The activist,convicted in 2010 for sedition,was granted bail by the Supreme Court. 2012 POLITICS: Struggling with factionalism and facing charges of being managed by the BJP,the Congress rebuilt this year,getting a new state president and a PCC working committee after eight years. With Chief Minister Raman Singh facing opposition within the party,2012 will see a build-up for Assembly elections the next year.
