Naxal held in Mumbai wanted in 4 cases

Alleged Naxal operative and a member of the banned People’s War Group (PWG) Surya Devra Prabhakar,who was arrested by the Maharashtra state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Tuesday,succeeded in avoiding the attention of law enforcement agencies for over three decades with the help of a web of aliases and frequent change of addresses.

He was arrested from outside his house in suburban Kanjur Marg. A statement by the ATS said Prabhakar was trying to spread Maoist philosophy in Mumbai.

According to ATS officers,Prabhakar was trying to organise Naxal supporters in the city in an attempt to create a base here. On Wednesday,he was remanded in police custody till January 28.

Prabhakar was arrested following an intelligence operation and is wanted in four cases in Gadchiroli. ATS chief K P Raghuvanshi said,“He was wanted for some time now. We were working along with the Andhra police on his movements.”

According to investigators,before arriving in Mumbai,Prabhakar worked in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Two identity-cards,an election card and a Central Railway season ticket identification card,were allegedly seized from his house. They had his photographs,but with an alias of Bharat Raman Gandhi.

The ATS officials say Prabhakar,who has worked as a translator,a tutor and even a cyber café manager,is proficient in five languages.
