Modi government sets up panel to investigate snooping row

Panel comprising a retired HC Judge and former Additional Chief Secretary will submit report in 3 months.

Under attack for alleged surveillance of a woman architect, the Narendra Modi government on Monday appointed “a two-member inquiry commission… to investigate all aspects of the

tapes controversy”.

The commission, comprising retired High Court Judge Sugna Bhatt and former Additional Chief Secretary K C Kapoor, will submit a report in three months, said Gujarat government spokesperson Nitin Patel.

Bhatt, who gave a clean chit to the Gujarat government as head of a state government-appointed commission to probe the 2006 Surat floods,is chairman of the state OBC commission at present. Kapoor last served as State Election Commissioner.

On Saturday, suspended IAS officer Pradeep Sharma had moved the Supreme Court seeking a CBI inquiry into the snooping controversy. Sharma claimed that his “knowledge of the intimacy” between Modi and the woman had led the government to file false corruption cases against him.
