Targeting Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi in the context of the Mirchpur incident, the BJP on Tuesday accused him of merely expressing sympathies to the ostracised Dalit families of the Haryana village. It said the Congress government in the state has so far not provided the much-needed security to the victims and asserted that the whole incident has exposed Gandhi’s so-called “love” for Dalits.

The main opposition party said Rahul and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda visited the village ten days after the incident and announced compensation for repairing damaged houses and employment for the next of the kin of the deceased which was turned down by the families of the victims.

“The families of the victims have asked for security to life and property. But the Congress government has so far not provided that. Rahul Gandhi posed as the well-wisher of Dalits after meeting the families and Sonia Gandhi merely conveyed her sympathies. Eventually, all this drama has proved to be a sham,” BJP spokesperson Ramnath Kovind said.

Kovind said the Supreme Court’s “admonition” of the Haryana government over the Mirchpur incident “exposes the administrative and constitutional failure of the state government.”

He asked the Haryana government to take immediate steps to rehabilitate the 150-odd Dalit families who were forced to leave the village after the killing of two of their community members.

“The state government has not taken any stringent action against the culprits. Rahul Gandhi should stop the hypocrisy of love for Dalits and instead get adequate relief and rehabilitation for the victims’ families from the state government,” Kovind said.
