In a throwback to the middle ages,a 26-year-old woman was forced by her husband to undergo a fidelity test by dipping her hand in boiling oil in Bhitoni village of Jabalpur district last week. Rajbhan Mahasingh Yadav has been on the run since his wife mustered up courage to approach Sihora Police Station,about 45 km from Jabalpur,to lodge a complaint. He suspected my character and made me dip my hand four times in boiling oil in the kitchen, Anju,a mother of three children,told the police. Anju's hand did not burn in the first two attempts so he forced her to repeat the test,by which time the oil in the pot had started to boil. Though the incident took place on June 29 the victim lodged the complaint only on Wednesday. Anjus parents advised her not to take up the matter to the police because the practice is very common. The police said villagers were not ready to come forward to give statements.
