Sugar mills had started crushing in the first week of December 2013 after SSS called off its agitation for higher cane prices.

With sugar factories in Maharashtra failing to pay sugarcane farmers their first installment price for the crop, the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana restarted their agitation on the first day of the year.

SSS leader and independent MP from Hathkhangale Raju Shetti led a crowd of 900 agitating farmers as they prot-ested outside the collectorate in Satara, demanding immediate payment to the farmers.

SSS had agitated against the amount proposed as first installment price of sugarcane, after which a rate of Rs 2,650 per tonne cane was fixed. However,Shetti and other SSS leaders claimed none of the cooperative sugar factories paid the money to the farmers though the law called for this payment to be made within 14 days.
