Lost opportunity

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram could not undertake his scheduled visit to the US last week...

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram could not undertake his scheduled visit to the US last week, apparently because he headed the ministerial committee set up to resolve the oil employees and truckers strike. But the sub-text also indicated political jealousy among certain party members not to let the new Home Minister function unhindered in areas technically not under his direct purview. Regardless of what happened, the fact remains that the visit was indeed an important one because the Bush Administration had decided to open all doors to Chidambaram,to give him highly classified briefings at their national counter-terrorism centre besides the latest from the Directorate of National Intelligence. Sources say the plan was to lay a foundation for deep cooperation at every level with the US intelligence and investigation system. But that was not to be,and now matters may have to start afresh with Barack Obama.
