PATNA: School teacher Rupam Pathak was on Saturday convicted by a special court of killing BJP MLA Rajkishore Keshri in Purnia last year. Designated CBI Judge B N Singh pronounced her guilty of stabbing to death Keshri and fixed April 10 as the date to decide quantum of punishment.

BANGALORE: Lokayukta Police on Saturday gave a clean chit to Excise Minister M P Renukacharya in a case pertaining to alleged violation of excise rules. They filed a memo before a court,saying no case was made out against Renukacharya for violation of excise rules as alleged by Excise DC Mohan Kumar.

Pregnant girl found dead,mother held

AZAMGARH: A woman along with two hired killers were arrested on Saturday in connection with the murder of her teenaged pregnant daughter. The body of the 18-year-old girl was found in a canal in Luchai village on March 27 and the autopsy report showed she was pregnant,said Additional SP M M Beg. Investigations revealed Sadrunnisha paid the killers Rs 10,000 for the murder.

Fearing passengers’ death,driver kills self

BAGALKOT: A three-wheeler driver committed suicide by hanging,fearing that four passengers who were injured when his vehicle overturned at a nearby village would die,police said. Maval firing: 47 protesters arrested

PUNE: Seven months after the Maval police firing in which three farmers were killed and nine injured,Pune rural police has arrested 47 persons for attacking the police. Judicial Magistrate (First Class) of Vadgaon Maval,Ashwini Lokhande,remanded the arrested farmers to judicial custody till April 12.

Gurdaspur DC transferred

CHANDIGARH: Punjab government on Saturday transferred Mohinder Singh Kainth,Deputy Commissioner of Gurdaspur where indefinite curfew was imposed following a communal clash. One person was killed in the police firing that followed the clash on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: On AFSPA,Home Minister P Chidambaram said his ministry has sought amendments in the controversial Act and the proposal is pending before the Cabinet Committee on Security. He was replying to questions about the suggestion made by UN’s Special Rapporteur on extra judicial summary or arbitrary executions Christof Heyns that AFSPA should be repealed as it was “symbol of excessive state power”.

Ruias and kin finally appear in court,seek bail

After failing to respond to separate summons that asked them to appear before the court on three dates,members of the Ruia family who are accused in the Essar-Loop case appeared before the special CBI court hearing the 2G spectrum cases on Saturday.

Essar Vice-Chairman Ravi Ruia,his nephew Anshuman Ruia,Ravi’s sister Kiran Khaitan and her husband I P Khaitan appeared before the court. A director with Essar Group,Anshuman is the son of Shashi Ruia,the eldest of the Ruia brothers and the chairman of the group. The brothers were fourth in the 2011 Forbes India Rich List,with a net worth of US $10.2 billion.

The four filed for bail,and the court posted the arguments for April 21 after the CBI counsel pleaded for time to file replies.

Five individuals — the fifth being Vikash Saraf,Director of Strategy & Planning at Essar — and three companies are accused in the case.
