Kolkata Port Trust has posted a five-fold jump in net profit to Rs 144.05 crore in 2010-11,compared to Rs 21.28 crore registered last year.
“There is just 2.4 per cent rise in cargo to 47.54 million tonne but increase in profit during the year was much higher due to diverse cargo,improved quality and cost effective measures,” KoPT Chairman M L Meena said here On Monday. Haldia Dock Complex handled a traffic of 35 million tonne – a growth of 5 per cent over the previous year against national growth of 1.6 per cent.
Kolkata Dock System handled lower cargo of 12.5 million tonne during the year,down from 13.04 million tonne registered in the previous year. Container traffic was up by 5 per cent to 5.26 lakh TEUs during the year under review. Meena said the port would complete the major projects undertaken by it within the next three years. KoPT’s major expansion plans include transloading at high sea,Haldia Dock II and Diamond Harbour terminal.
