India will send foreign minister Salman Khurshid to Hassan Rouhani’s inauguration as Iranian President on August 4,sources said.

This is the first time in three decades that Iran has invited foreign governments to the swearing-in function of its President.

Besides Khurshid,10 foreign ministers; as many presidents, including Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan and Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan; three prime ministers, including Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey; and 5 vice-presidents have so far confirmed to attend the function, the sources said.

Khurshid had travelled to Tehran for a bilateral visit in April and assured his hosts that India was committed to developing the Chabahar port.

Rouhani had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier this month that developing relations with India “will be a foreign policy priority for the next Iranian administration.”

Rouhani had visited India in 2002 and held discussions with his then counterpart,National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra. Indian experts see a pragmatic shift in Tehran’s foreign policy under Rouhani.
