Greg Heffley needs new friends this summer,now that his old best friend Rowley Jefferson is no longer talking to him. But as Greg discovers in The Ugly Truth Puffin,Rs 250,the fifth book in Jeff Kinneys Diary of a Wimpy Kid series,finding a friend is not that easy. His potential best friends are Christoper Brownfield and Tyson Sanders,but Christopher is a mosquito magnet and Tyson happens to be irritating in his own way. For Greg,there are some more big issues like dealing with pimples,people who snore,girl-boy parties and kids who post their pictures online and seem to be having a way better time than him. Greg is trying hard to grow up fast,but he is also scared he could be getting into a state of arrested development. The illustrations tell half the story. Like everyone who is nine knows,Gregs diary is fun to read.
In Chris Bradfords book Young Samurai: The Ring of Earth Puffin,Rs 299,15-year-old Jack Fletcher is the young samurai. He has avenged the death of his father,who was killed by a ninja warrior,and is trying to get to the port of Nagasaki and find a way home to England. But Jack gets kidnapped by the evil samurai Shogun. Soon Jack is taught how to use the ninja sword and throw metal stars and,yes,the art of being invisible. To prove his loyalty,Jack has to keep the ninja village safe. The book has 57 chapters but it is an easy read. The cover warns that there are scenes of violence but they are not too gory. What the story does so well is let you exercise your imagination recreating the ninja village which to the untrained eye is a pretty farming hamlet,but is in fact a complex layout that is intended to keep it safe from an enemy attack.
