JEE out as Bengal govt agrees to medical CET

Bengal govt has agreed to MCI plan to admit students in medical colleges across India through a common entrance test.

The West Bengal government has agreed to the Medical Council of Indias (MCI) plan to admit students in medical colleges across India through a common entrance test (CET). As a result,from next year,there will be no Joint Entrance Examination in West Bengal for students aspiring to get into state medical colleges.

But students need not worry because just like in the JEE where 85 per cent of the seats were reserved for students of Bengal domicile,the CET too has a similar provision for local students.

This will come as relief as there was a fear that students from other states will corner most of the 1,700 medical seats in the state.

Director of Medical Education (West Bengal) Sushant Banerjee,who led a team of officials to Delhi to convey the state governments reservations on the CET,told The Indian Express over the phone that nothing much could be done. How long can we object? We have to agree to it, he said.

Council officials assured the team that its demand for a Bengali version of the CET paper will be considered.
