Jagan seeks ‘YSR Party’ name, rules out early polls

Former Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who along with his mother Vijayalakshmi quit the Congress recently, has decided to name his yet-to-be launched political outfit as “YSR Party” after the name of his father and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Sitting on a 48-hour fast on the banks of Krishna near the Prakasam Barrage here,he said in an interview to The Indian Express on Tuesday that he has applied to the Election Commission for the name of ‘YSR Party’ although he is still receiving feedback from the people. He had earlier advertised an address and telephone numbers on his Sakshi TV channel, asking people to suggest the name of his party.

“I am told some people in Delhi will create problems (about the proposed name ‘YSR’). But,finally, justice will prevail,” said Jagan who turned 38 on Tuesday. Asked whether he will contest the bypolls — his Kadapa parliamentary constituency fell vacant after his resignation from the Lok Sabha — Jagan said,“Yes,definitely”.

Jagan suspected “foul play” in the helicopter crash in which his father was killed on September 2,2009. “How can so many things go wrong in one day? Not just me,so many lakhs of people have doubts (about the helicopter crash). Not a single person has been named (in investigation report)!” he said.

The former Kadapa MP also ruled out the possibility of returning to the Congress. “It is too late. I have come too far,” he said.

While Jagan said he did not see the possibility of mid-term polls in the state as “I have already said I am ready to wait till 2014”,he is obviously sensing trouble for Kiran Kumar Reddy government in the wake of Srikrishna Committee report on Telangana.

“When I had 150 MLAs with me,I did not see mid-term polls. Why should I see it now? I am not the Congress party. I believe in value-based politics. I am ready to wait till 2014. There will be no mid-term polls until the Congress goofs up on Telangana. KCR (Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhar Rao) is already provoking people and he will ask them to resign,” said Jagan. He,however, refused to spell out his stand on the demand for statehood for Telangana, saying he will comment only after Srikrishna Committee gives its report.

The first day of his fast at Vijayawada turned out to be a show of strength as he attracted huge crowds. He was joined by about 20 Congress MLAs and many MLCs. Those on the dais included TDP founder N T Rama Rao’s widow Lakshmi Parvati, actor Rajasekhar and his wife Jivitha.

“The state government is complacent thinking that it has three years. But three years pass in a jiffy,” said Jagan drawing applause from the crowd.
