Scientists claim to have made a major breakthrough which could stop patients rejecting organ transplants, without using immunosuppressants.

An international team, led by the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, has in fact discovered a method of adjusting the immune system for just long enough to receive a tissue transplant and accept it as “self”.

According to the scientists, the discovery would one day remove the need for a lifetime of toxic immunosuppressive drugs after organ transplants. They have based their conclusion after successfully testing the method in laboratory mice, the findings of which are published in the latest issue of Journal of Experimental Medicine.
