In his endeavour to ensure the well-being of the aam aadmi,YSR surpassed his predecessor N Chandrababu Naidu, who developed IT for industrialisation, while YSR leveraged IT to ensure reach of the programmes to the beneficiaries. YSR was known for his passion to promote irrigation through his flagship programme Jalayagnam, under which he built 26 major irrigation projects and six medium irrigation projects with an estimated investment of Rs 56,000 crore. He used to monitor the project routinely, officials said. Another flagship programme of the deceased CM was the Indiraamma scheme to provide basic amenities to 1.82 crore rural and 45 lakh poor urban population. In the field of NREGA,Andhra Pradesh achieved an amazing 94 per cent efficiency against states like Jharkhand (whose efficiency is a mere 26 per cent) through intensive monitoring and leveraging IT designed by the Tata Consultancy Services for zeroing in on the beneficiaries. Concerned that the poor populace was unable to access proper healthcare,YSR launched the Rajiv Arogyasri wherein those Below Poverty Line were given cashless health insurance cards. About two lakh families were given such cards against the national target of 30,000 BPL families being given this healthcare through the Rashtriya Swasthya Vima Yojana. Among his other social sector schemes was the Indira Prabha scheme which was designed to ensure effective cultivation. Jawahar Knowledge Centres were set up in every district to impart industry grade (soft) skills to female engineering students. Praja Patham was launched to ensure visits of all mandal level officers, along with concerned legislator,to all panchayats.
