Fantastic Four

With Always Kabhi Kabhi,Roshan Abbas debuts as a director in B-town. Here he talks about the filming of the title-track,and a lot more

The entire team of Always Kabhi Kabhi had a ball of a time on the sets, and why not? When four youngsters form the cast of the film, what else can one expect? Roshan Abbas, the debutant director of the film, gives a glimpse of on-the-sets fun they had during the shoot.

For the title-track of Always Kabhi Kabhi, the team landed up at a bungalow in Mumbai’s Madh Island, which they recreated into a Thai spa. The song was to show how the four of them bond and become friends. “The song is a montage of their friendship. For this particular scene, while Zoa Morani is getting her leg waxed,it is Giselli Monterio who responds to the pain Zoa might be going through. Hence she is supposed to scream. But she was not getting the intensity right. I wanted her to express better. Hence I had to enact it myself to make her realise it,” explained the director. The scene, where the actors were supposed to relive their moments, got wrapped up in four takes.

Zoa experienced a proud moment when the director asked her to sound the clap for a scene. According to the director,it was like a pat on the back for anyone. He explained,“It is an honour to get a chance to sound the clap, specially if the actor is a debutant and in a film with many actors.”

The scene that Zoa gave a clap for was a very serious one and was critical to the plot. It was a night scene being shot at a hospital. “We shot it at Fortis, located at Navi Mumbai. The scene required Sathyajit Dubey and Zoa to come outside of the hospital and have a conversation. This sequence happens one day after their school,” explained Abbas.

During the canning of the song School ke din,the four became good friends and there used to be chaos on the sets. Says the director,“The bunch of four have a lot of energy and were always having fun. They were always on the lookout for a chance to pull each other’s leg. During this song,Ali Fasal was supposed to do a Shashi Kapoor kind of dance step and Giselli and Zoa were finding it really funny. They wanted to take his picture but since I did not want him distracted,I forbade the girls in the frame or in front of him. I got them a ladder, they climbed up and took a photo of him, overlooking the wall.” The scene was shot at La Martiniere College,Lucknow. The song was shot with 40 professional dancers and 200 local students in this college which is five football fields large and looks more like a palace than a college.

He further added,“It was a nostalgic moment some of us as Ali,two of the DOPs involved in the project and I have passed out from here. The canteen guy was still there. Though old,he was very friendly and would get us tangdi kabab and biryani.”

Abbas recalled that since it was extremely cold in Lucknow, one fine morning there was so much fog that a truck carrying the shooting equipments went to Allahabad instead of Lucknow as the driver couldn’t see the road.

For a scene where the director wanted to establish the beauty of Giselli,he brought in his little daughter. The scene had the actress coming out of the airport and standing next to a little girl with a doll in her hand. The doll falls off and as the child is about to pick it up,she looks up at Giselli and forgets the doll and stares at her thinking,‘She is even prettier than my doll’. “I was excited about this scene but unfortunately we had to cancel it as there were two cops standing there. Seeing them,my daughter started crying,” he said.

Always Kabhi Kabhi was completed in 75 days and is set to release on June 17.
