The Centre on Friday assured the Supreme Court that “no effort has been spared” to tackle the situation arising from the racial attacks on Indian students in Australia.

“The Government has been extremely concerned about the safety of the Indian students studying in Australia and has spared no efforts in making sure that these students are protected,” claimed the Ministry of External Affairs in its response to the apex court.

Replying to a notice issued to it on June 22,in response to a PIL filed by Ranveer Yadav seeking directions to prevent such attacks, the Union Government outlined steps taken by the Australian Government “at the instance of the Indian Government”. The court was informed that while a police operation to investigate the attacks on students has been launched,a Police Community Reference Group has been set up to improve communications with students. The Government informed the court how sustained diplomatic pressure had forced Australia to do a re-think existing laws to deal with racist attacks.
