Cong gears up for win,BJP says still in race

The Congressmen here are ready with confetti; they just don’t know on whom to shower it

The Congressmen here are ready with confetti; they just don’t know on whom to shower it. The BJP’s confetti has B C Khanduri written all over it,but the partymen look like they know they may not get a chance to shower it. Nevertheless, they have it ready — just in case.

Saying he expects a majority for his party and victory for himself,Chief Minister B C Khanduri added that he was willing to live in a world where his party would not be in power. “That’s part of the game, part of the system,” he said.

The word on the street is that the Congress has an edge. At least in public, the Congress expresses no doubts about a victory. PCC spokesperson Dhirendra Pratap said they expect at least 40 seats in the 70-member Assembly. The party’s worries lie elsewhere. “We have half-a-dozen chief ministerial candidates,” said Pratap.

Harak Singh Rawat, the Opposition Leader in the Assembly and the Congress candidate from Rudraprayag,is one of the chief ministerial aspirants. But he said he would abide by the party high command’s decision.

It is not just the Congress that is hampered by warring factions. It is no secret that former chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was not happy at being replaced by Khanduri just four months before the elections.

On Monday,Pokhriyal celebrated Holi with his supporters and friends at his official residence. The chief guest was Congress leader and former state CM N D Tiwari. “Rivalry….what rivalry? We will all celebrate the Holi of victory together,” said Tiwari.
