The CBI special task force investigating the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case has sent officials to Nashik to interrogate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and Prasad Purohit about fresh leads emerging from the interrogation of the two persons arrested in connection with the Ajmer blast.

The CBI had earlier tried to investigate the link between Mecca Masjid and Ajmer after SIM cards that were used in the cellphones to trigger the blasts at both blast sites turned out to be from the same series. However, the agency had drawn a blank after almost 20 months of investigations. Nine persons were killed in the blast at Mecca Masjid.

“The SIM card angle has been investigated earlier also. The interrogation of the duo arrested by Rajasthan Police has given some fresh leads to the STF,” a CBI official said, refusing to confirm or deny if a team was in Nashik to interrogate Pragya Singh and Purohit. On Friday,a court granted the team permission to interrogate the two in Nashik.

The Mecca Masjid blast case was initially investigated by the Special Investigation Team of the Hyderabad police. The probe was handed over to CBI on May 24,2007. The Mecca Masjid case has been through several twists and turns with Muslim groups alleging that it was the handiwork of radical Hindu groups while police investigation focused on involvement of terror groups.

A new lead emerged when a SIM card found at the site turned out to be from the same series as the one used in the Ajmer Sharif blast on October 11,2007.
