CBI quizzes A Raja again, ropes in ED

The CBI questioned former telecom minister A Raja for the second consecutive day.

The CBI on Saturday questioned former telecom minister A Raja for the second consecutive day at its headquarters for almost eight hours even as the agency roped in Enforcement Directorate officials in the case.

Sources in the agency, however, said Raja had “not been able to give any clarifications yet” on allegedly benefiting some telecom companies and his relatives in the multi-crore 2G spectrum scam.

Raja, according to the sources, reached the CBI headquarters around 8.30 am and was questioned about the ‘money trail’ in specific and also about Swan Telecom and Unitech. The companies were allegedly given 2G licences by flouting rules and regulations of the Department of Telecom, which did not follow its own guidelines on eligibility conditions.

“The department arbitrarily changed the cut-off date for receipt of applications and altered the conditions of the ‘first-come,first-served (FCFS)’ procedure without valid reasons. This gave unfair advantage to certain companies over eligible ones. Raja had a say in all this and we asked him about all the companies individually as to what made him decide on those companies and on whose recommendation,” said a source.

Raja was confronted with documents which were recovered following raids at 27 places, including at his house, that of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia and the DoT office.

On Saturday, the CBI also focussed on Radia tapes and her conversations with several companies and with Raja, added the source.

CBI DIG and spokesperson Binita Thakur said,“A Raja was questioned for the second day. The details cannot be shared at this moment.”

A Letter Rogatory (LR) would also be sent to as many as three countries, including Singapore,by the CBI to know about the financial trail in the 2G scam as the agency has alleged that some of the kin of the former minister were associated with the case, the sources added.
