CBI files chargesheet against student of IIM-Lucknow

The CBI filed the chargesheet before the court of Special Judicial Magistrate,CBI

The CBI has filed a chargesheet against IIM-Lucknow student Rahul Verma in the case of murder of Mumbai-based fashion designer Adesh Bajpai, who had gone missing in 2008 in Kanpur. Verma, formerly an IIT-Kanpur student, has been accused of kidnapping and killing Bajpai and destroying evidence.

The CBI filed the chargesheet before the court of Special Judicial Magistrate,CBI,Neel Kant Mani Tripathi,on Saturday.

Verma was a student at IIT,Kanpur, and Bajpai had reportedly met him last before he went missing on August 10,2008. CBI sources said Bajpai and Verma had been in touch on a social networking website popular among gays. The record of call details of Adesh Bajpai showed he was present inside the IIT-K campus before he went missing.

The CBI had arrested Rahul after collecting circumstantial evidence against him in January. Since then he has been lodged in jail.

“We suspect involvement of some more persons in the crime. But so far,we have not found any direct evidence against any other person. The investigation is on,” said a CBI official. He added that they had to file the chargesheet within 90 days of Verma’s arrest, otherwise he would have been entitled to get bail.

After Bajpai (30) went missing,acid-washed human bones were found in a gunny bag on the campus at IIT-K. A forensic report confirmed that the DNA in the bones matched that of Bajpai’s parents. The 30-year-old had visited Kanpur on August 10,and was last seen alive by his cousin Vivek Trivedi, who told the police that Bajpai had left with “a friend from IIT-K”. Trivedi later identified this “friend” from a picture that police found in Bajpai’s e-mail.
