Apart from the serious charges of murder, abduction, illegal detention and criminal conspiracy, the CBI has also accused Amit Shah, who resigned from the post of Minister of State (Home) on Sunday,of hampering investigations and threatening witnesses.
According to the central investigating agency, after the Supreme Court transferred the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case to the CBI,Shah and two other accused Ajay Patel and Yashpal Chudasama, who are both absconding tried to hamper the probe and threatened witnesses.
The CBI chargesheet says that Shah directed Patel and Chudasama to convince, coerce, threaten and influence the witnesses on his behalf to conceal the truth from CBI about the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin.
The 2005 encounter case was transferred to the CBI in January this year.
Investigations revealed that Patel relayed to two witnesses,Raman Patel and Dashrat Patel, that what they said before the CBI would be provided to them in the form of written statements by the then Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhay Chudasama, who is also an accused, said the CBI.
Both witnesses had four meetings with men sent by Shah at separate places. These meetings were secretly videographed by the two witnesses. This audio-visual recording has been seized by the CBI.
The transcription of these meetings revealed obstruction and influencing of the witnesses by Shah and Abhay Chudasama, says the chargesheet.
Shah is also accused of threatening the family members of Sohrabuddin in Madhya Pradesh. The case was handed over to the CBI on the basis of their petition.
According to the CBI chargesheet,Abhay Chudasama,at Shahs behest, tried to influence Sohrabuddins family members by offering Rs 50 lakh for withdrawing their petition from the apex court. When they refused to accept the offer,Abhay Chudasama reportedly threatened them with dire consequences, saying the same political party was in power in Madhya Pradesh, and Shah would get them eliminated in Madhya Pradesh itself.
