As India made its first high-level political contact with the Muslim Brotherhood during External Affairs Minister S M Krishnas visit to Egypt over the weekend,it emerged that the Brotherhood is a moderate and forward-looking group.

This,it is learnt,is the gist of the Indian delegations 45-minute meeting with Mohammed Morsy, the chairman of Freedom and Justice Party FJP and the electoral face of Brotherhood. Morsy,an English-speaking leader, was accompanied by senior officials from the partys international affairs cell.

Sources said that Krishnas meeting is being seen as a very significant development. While India had good ties with the Hosni Mubarak government, the meeting with Morsy helped the Indian side understand the expectations of the new political regime. The FJP,registered as a legal outfit in 2011,has emerged as the largest party winning 235 of the 498 seats in the Egyptian parliament.

Morsy is understood to have told the Indian delegation that Egypt needs to look more towards East, and India is an important country in that context.
