In 78,India knew Pak was 2-3 yrs from atom bomb
Washington: Though the US and the UK did not inform India of the operation to stop Pakistan from going nuclear,New Delhi had its own intelligence in 1978 to conclude that Islamabad was just two or three years away from making an atomic bomb,according to declassified documents. Both the US and Britain collectively decided not to inform India about the operation,fearing it would have an adverse impact in Pakistan if leaked. But the then US Ambassador to India Robert Francis Goheen observed that the Indian government has known for some time that we believe Pakistan to be bent on achieving a nuclear weapons capability.
BBC reporter killed in Afghan attack
LONDON: The BBC said one of its reporters has died in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan that killed at least 19 people. The broadcaster said that Ahmad Omid Khpolwak was killed in Thursdays suicide attack in the southern Uruzgan province. Two suicide bombers blew up vehicles packed with explosives in two almost simultaneous attacks in Uruzgan. The Taliban has claimed responsibility.
Signal flaw caused China train crash
wenzhou: The Beijing National Railway Research amp; Design Institute of Signals and Communications Co Ltd took responsibility on Thursday for a flaw in signalling equipment that led to a high-speed train collision on Saturday,killing 39 people. Premier Wen Jiabao visited the crash site and vowed a thorough and transparent probe.
Finnish teen arrested on explosives charge
HELSINKI: Finnish police on Thursday arrested an 18-year-old man who ordered 10 kilograms of fertiliser,which contains ammonium nitrate,from Poland to make explosives. Media cited police as saying the man wanted to experiment with making fireworks. Police said the case has no connections to the Utoeya massacre.
